Learn to Row
Station L has been teaching people to row for 35 years. Novice [beginner] and Intermediate sweep rowing classes are offered in the spring, summer and fall. Sweep rowing is done in team boats with four or eight people. Station L classes are for adults 18 and over. For those under 18, we recommend the program at Rose City Rowing Club, our neighbors in the Portland Boathouse.
Our 2010 Learn to Row classes begin in late March. Registration is now open.
To register, fill out the online registration form, select the class you wish to take from the Class Schedule and hit "Submit". Your class spot is not reserved until you mail a check with 50% of the class fee as a deposit to Station L Rowing Club Classes, PO Box 14035, Portland OR 97293.
Alternatively, you may print out the registration form and mail it in with your deposit check. If you have questions about classes, email the Class Registrar.
A swim test is required to participate in Station L learn to row classes. The swim test form and instructions are available here.
Novice sweep classes are designed for the beginning rower. Classes emphasize safety, rowing technique and individual fitness. Special equipment is not required. Class members learn to row in eight person shells. Our sweep rowing classes generally include 10 two hour lessons for $150, and a class size of 8 to 12.
Intermediate sweep classes are designed for rowers with some limited experience. Rowing technique, fitness and an introduction to competition are included in this class.
Graduates of our Novice class may enroll in the Intermediate class. While enrolled in an Intermediate class, class members are encouraged to attend our Saturday morning club coached open rowing sessions from 7-9am. Graduates of the Intermediate class also receive one month of free club membership. During this period you may sample any of the club's coached rowing programs.
Rowers with previous experience (one year +) should check the Members section of this site and contact the club about taking part in a guest row or becoming a member.
Instructors for our classes in 2009 included Thom Greene, Erika Simeon, Peter Edwards, Ben Rice and Kinsey Keller. Once classes start in March, email links for each instructor will be available.
Sculling Classes are sometimes offered for EXPERIENCED scullers only. These sessions are held according to demand and availability of instructors. Contact the club Registrar if you are interested. Experienced scullers are encouraged to join the club, where they can take part in either our Competitive Sculling or Sculling Fundamentals programs. Both are coached programs for club members.
